SINGAPORE: Train services on the Sengkang-Punggol Light Rail Transit (LRT) were disrupted for about four hours on Friday (Aug 15) due to a power fault.

The issue started at around 8.40am, affecting services at all 29 stations on the network.

Preliminary findings suggest that a cable fault between two stations tripped the LRT network, SBS Transit's Group CEO Jeffrey Sim said in a Facebook post.

The incident occurred just three days after a major breakdown on the Sengkang-Punggol LRT, as well as the North-East Line. It was caused by a trip in the main and backup power supply at a depot substation, the transport operator previously said.

On Friday, Mr Sim said that Tuesday's incident had "damaged the back-up switchboard of the power system".

"We are now running on only the main and single switch board. Without the availability of the back-up switchboard, this cable fault caused service to be disrupted and a lengthier service recovery time," he added.

The cable fault also resulted in 10 trains stalling on the tracks, said Mr Sim.

"All passengers, including those on mobility aids, have safely disembarked from the trains. This took some time before recovery works could proceed," he added, apologising for the inconvenience.

A commuter who boarded at Punggol LRT told Â鶹 that at about 8.50am, the train had stopped at the station and its lights were off. An electronic sign on the platform stated that train services were "temporarily suspended".

Providing an update at 1pm, SBS Transit said that service on the Sengkang LRT had fully resumed since 12.54pm.

It was earlier announced that the Punggol LRT had fully resumed since 12.32pm.

During the disruption, free regular and bridging bus services were provided to commuters at designated stops at the affected stations.

Free bus rides were also available from Sengkang and Punggol bus interchanges, said SBS Transit.
